Skycut A Series auto feeder cutting plotter
Skycut A Series – an auto feeder loads a stack of printed sheets so the cutter can keep working.

An auto feeder is what turns a sheet cutter from a one-sheet machine into a stack machine. Instead of placing every sticker sheet, label or card by hand, you load a pile and the feeder sends the next sheet in when the last one is done.

This guide from Skycut India explains what the feeder does, how to run a stack, and which A Series model to look at. The wider machine comparison is in our automatic cutter guide, and sheet jobs in general are covered in sheet cutter.

Quick answer

  • An auto feeder loads sheets from a stack, one at a time.
  • Use it for repeated printed sheets: stickers, labels, tags, cards and small cartons.
  • Skip it for roll vinyl and radium. A roll plotter is the right tool there.
  • Skycut options: A3 Max 4, A3 Max Metal and the dual-head A3 Max 5.

What is an auto feeder?

A normal sheet job starts with a person. They square one sheet, start the cut, take it out, and repeat. An auto feeder does that loading step. The stack sits in the tray. The machine pulls the next sheet, the cutter finishes it, and the feeder advances again.

The feeder does not design the file and it does not replace a camera. On printed stickers, the camera still has to find the registration marks on each sheet so the cut follows the print. The feeder only removes the pause between sheets.

How to run a stack

1

Print a consistent stack

Use the same sheet size, the same orientation and registration marks on every sheet in that job.

2

Fan and square the stack

Separate sheets that stick together, then square the stack against the guides so the first sheet is not crooked.

3

Load one test sheet

Cut a single sheet first. Confirm the outline and the kiss cut before you trust the whole stack.

4

Start the stack

Place the stack in the auto feeder and start the saved job. Stay nearby for the first few sheets.

5

Watch the first feeds

Check that one sheet enters at a time and that finished sheets stack neatly. Then let the job run.

Keep one job in one stack. Mixed sizes, mixed print directions or a damp pile are the usual reasons a feeder misfeeds. Thicker card and board should be stacked shorter than thin sticker sheets.

Jobs an auto feeder is for

  • Sticker sheets that come off a printer already imposed, with marks in the same place on every sheet.
  • Labels and tags where the shape repeats and someone is currently feeding sheets by hand.
  • Cards and visiting cards cut from a consistent stack.
  • Small cartons when the machine also has a crease tool. The A3 Max 5 can cut and crease in one pass.

Roll lettering, bike radium and long sign vinyl do not belong on a sheet feeder. Those jobs stay on a vinyl plotter.

Feed problems

What you see What to change
Two sheets go in togetherFan the stack, shorten it, and keep sheets dry so they do not cling
The sheet enters crookedSquare the stack to the guides before you start
The cut misses the printCheck registration marks and run one test sheet. Feeding and camera alignment are separate
Thick board will not feedUse a shorter stack. Very rigid board belongs on a flatbed
The stack stops halfwayStay for the first sheets of a new material, then refill before the tray runs empty

Frequently asked questions

An auto feeder is the tray and feed system that picks printed sheets from a stack and loads them into the cutter one after another. You load the stack once. The machine feeds, cuts and moves on to the next sheet instead of waiting for someone to place each sheet by hand.

The auto feeder is the part that loads sheets. An automatic cutter is the whole machine: feeder, camera registration and cutting heads. A roll vinyl plotter can be automatic in other ways and still have no auto feeder, because it cuts a roll, not a stack of sheets.

You need one when the same printed sheet job repeats many times: sticker sheets, labels, tags, cards or small cartons. If most of your work is roll vinyl, lettering or radium, a roll plotter is the better fit.

It depends on the model and the material. The Skycut A3 Max 4 is listed to stack up to 180 sheets, depending on the material. The A3 Max Metal is listed for intelligent auto paper feeding of up to 150 sheets at a time. Thicker board means a shorter stack.

Yes, when the cutter has a camera. The camera reads registration marks on each sheet and cuts along the printed outline. Feeding and contour cutting are two different features that work together on a sheet job.

The A Series sheet cutters do. The A3 Max 4 is a high-speed auto-feeder plotter. The A3 Max Metal feeds up to 150 sheets. The A3 Max 5 adds dual heads so it can cut and crease automatically fed sheets in one pass.

Final thoughts

Buy an auto feeder when the bottleneck is loading sheets, not designing them. The A3 Max 4 and A3 Max Metal cover stacked sheet cutting. Add the A3 Max 5 when those sheets also need a crease. For roll vinyl, stay with a plotter and skip the feeder.
