Skycut A3 Max 5 box making machine for small cartons
Skycut A3 Max 5 – dual heads cut and crease small cartons from sheets.

A box making machine cuts a carton blank and creases the folds from a file. A new box size does not have to wait for a steel die. You change the drawing and run the next blank.

This guide from Skycut India covers that job: small cartons on the A3 Max 5, and rigid board on the F6090 flatbed. How a crease differs from a cut is in the scoring machine guide. The table itself is in flatbed.

Quick answer

  • A box making machine cuts the outline and creases the folds.
  • Small cartons from sheets: A3 Max 5, cut and crease in one pass.
  • Rigid board: F6090 flatbed for box-making.
  • Vinyl stickers stay on a roll plotter. They are not a box job.

What a box making machine does

A finished carton needs two operations. The blade cuts the outside shape and any slots. A crease tool presses the lines the box will fold on. A box making machine does both from the same file.

On the A3 Max 5, dual heads run cut and crease in one pass, and the auto feeder brings the next sheet. On the F6090, the board stays on a vacuum bed for half-cut, full-cut and box-making. A vinyl plotter only kiss-cuts film. It does not replace either machine.

If the blank already comes off the printer as an A3 sheet, start with the sheet cutter. Sheet feeding is covered in sheet cutter. If the board is too stiff to feed, move it to the flatbed.

How a box job runs

1

Draw cut and crease separately

The outline is a through-cut. The fold lines are creases. Keep them as different paths in the file.

2

Match the blank to the machine

Small cartons can run on the A3 Max 5. Rigid board that must lie flat goes on the F6090.

3

Test one blank

Cut and crease a single piece. Fold it before you run the rest of the job.

4

Run the stack or the next sheet

On the A3 Max 5, automatic feeding takes the next sheet. On the flatbed, clear the bed and place the next board.

5

Fold on the crease

A clean crease folds without cracking the print. If it cracks, lighten the crease before you change the outline.

Cut lines and crease lines

  • Cut is the outline, the lid slots and any window that must go through the board.
  • Crease is the fold. It should not cut the sheet in half.
  • One file, two paths. If both are sent as cuts, the box falls apart on the fold line.
  • Print first, then finish. Leave room for the outline so the artwork is not trimmed off the panel.

Thick card that is not a full carton can also be cut and creased on the D Series, which has dual independent heads and up to 2000 g of cutting force. For a rigid box blank, use the F6090.

Skycut box making machines

  • A3 Max 5 for small cartons: dual heads cut and crease, and the feeder handles repeat sheets.
  • F6090 for box-making on a vacuum flatbed, including half-cut and full-cut.
  • F4560 when you need the flatbed with the large touch screen. Confirm the sheet size before you choose between the two beds.

Both flatbeds are on the Exclusive Series page. Call +91 9990391515 or send an enquiry with the largest blank you make.

When the box fails

What you see What to change
The fold tears the boardThe crease was sent as a cut. Put fold lines on the crease path
The panel will not foldThe crease is too light, or it missed the fold line
The outline is clippedThe blank is larger than the sheet cutter or hanging off the flatbed
Print is cut off the faceThe outline is too tight. Add room between artwork and the cut
Only one sample is neededRun one blank and fold it before a stack. Samples are what this machine is for

Frequently asked questions

A box making machine cuts the outline of a carton and creases the fold lines from a digital file. You do not need a new steel die for every box size. On Skycut machines, the A3 Max 5 does this on sheets, and the F6090 flatbed does it on board that stays flat on the table.

A roll plotter such as the V24 cuts vinyl and radium. It is not a box making machine. Boxes need a cut and a crease. Use the A3 Max 5 for small cartons, or the F6090 when the board is rigid.

The A3 Max 5 feeds sheets and uses dual heads to cut and crease in one pass. It suits small cartons and repeat sheet jobs. The F6090 is a vacuum flatbed described for half-cut, full-cut and box-making, for board that will not roll through a sheet cutter.

For a new size, a sample, or a short run, a digital box making machine replaces the die. A steel die can still make sense when the same box is produced in very large quantities. The machine is there so a size change does not wait on a new die.

The crease is missing, too light, or on the wrong line. The outline cut and the fold line are different paths. Recheck the crease before you change the cut. Folding technique is covered in our scoring machine guide.

Choose the A3 Max 5 when the blank fits an A3-class sheet and you want cut and crease together. Choose the F6090 when the sheet is rigid board for box-making. Send the sheet size with your enquiry and Skycut India will confirm the fit.

Final thoughts

Use a box making machine when the job is a carton, not a sticker. The A3 Max 5 cuts and creases small sheet cartons in one pass. The F6090 takes rigid board on a vacuum bed. Send the blank size to Skycut India before you choose.
