Sticker making on a Skycut cutting plotter
Skycut plotter – sticker making from design file to kiss-cut peel.

Sticker making is the workflow from design to peel-ready sticker: file setup, print when needed, kiss cut, weed and apply. The cutter shapes the sticker. Colour either comes from the vinyl roll or from a printer first.

This how-to from Skycut India walks through both paths and the machines that fit each one. Buying a cutter is in sticker machine. Matching by sticker type is in sticker cutting machine.

Quick answer

  • Solid stickers: design → cut on V24 → weed.
  • Printed stickers: print with marks → camera cut on C24 / CX.
  • Repeat sheets: stack on an A Series feeder.
  • Always: kiss-cut the face, leave the liner.

What sticker making is

Sticker making is production, not just owning a plotter. A clean file, the right media, a kiss cut that does not slash the liner, and careful weeding decide whether the sticker looks shop-ready.

Material types are covered in vinyl sticker. This page focuses on the steps you repeat every job.

How to make stickers

1

Prepare a cut-ready file

Convert text to curves. Keep closed shapes. For printed stickers, place registration marks the camera can read.

2

Choose solid vinyl or print first

Solid colour comes from the roll. Full-colour stickers are printed, then cut. Do not skip marks on printed sheets.

3

Load media and set a kiss cut

Load the roll or sheet. Test so the blade cuts the face and leaves the liner. Adjust force before the full job.

4

Cut and weed

Run the job. Peel waste vinyl away from the design. Check small letters lift cleanly.

5

Transfer or leave on the liner

Apply with transfer tape, or sell kiss-cut stickers still on the sheet for the customer to peel.

Force and blade tips are in cutting force and cutting vinyl.

Tips for clean peels

  • Test a corner first. One small sticker saves a wasted roll.
  • Keep letters large enough to weed. Tiny gaps trap waste vinyl.
  • Use fresh blades on radium and thick film. Dull tips tear instead of cut.
  • Do not over-cut the liner. A sliced backing makes weeding and application harder.
  • Square printed sheets before camera cutting so marks sit in the same place every time.

Frequently asked questions

Sticker making is the full workflow of turning a design into a peel-ready sticker: prepare the file, print if needed, kiss-cut on a plotter, weed the waste and apply or sell on the liner. Solid-colour stickers skip printing. Printed stickers need registration marks and a camera cutter.

Only for full-colour printed stickers. Solid vinyl lettering and logos use coloured film from a roll, so a cutting plotter alone is enough. Printed die-cuts need a printer first, then a camera contour cutter.

Use a Skycut V24 for solid vinyl stickers. Use a C24 or CX16 / CX24 when stickers are printed and must cut on the outline. Use an A Series feeder when the same printed sheets repeat in stacks. Machine buying detail is in our sticker machine guide.

Weeding is peeling away the waste vinyl after the kiss cut so only the design stays on the liner. Small letters need a clean cut and a sharp blade. If waste will not lift, deepen the kiss cut slightly and retest.

The steps are the same, but reflective film needs more force, a sharp blade and often a slower speed. See our radium cutting guide for settings. Everyday bike and car radium often runs on a V24 or VH Series.

They share kiss cutting, but labels often mean barcode or product sheets with stricter layouts. Stickers are usually decorative or branding graphics. Label workflow is covered in our label cutting guide.

Final thoughts

Sticker making succeeds when the file is clean, the kiss cut leaves the liner, and weeding is easy. Use the V24 for solid vinyl. Use a C or CX camera for printed outlines. For which cutter to buy, read sticker machine. For type matching, read sticker cutting machine.
